Aim of course

Antike Architektur - Moderne Siedlung - Archäologische Landschaft

The aim of the course is to analyse the core concept proposed for the semester from different points of view, using historical, artistic and philosophical inspirations and approaches. Theoretical lessons will propose different approaches to the main topic, using examples from the history of architecture. The counterpart to this theoretical approach is a student exercise related to the topic chosen for the semester: students will be required to select a place / building / spatial situation in the historical centre of a city, which can express and represent the main concept of the course. The aim of this work is to give students the possibility to apply the theoretical background provided by the lectures in a personal analysis of the chosen topic. The course can be seen as a theoretical introduction to 251.122, City Survey: archaeological survey of city developments , which is based on more intense field research.

Subject of course

The course will be based on several theoretical lectures, focusing on deeper analysis of the topic proposed for the semester. Moreover, students will be involved in open discussions in the form of brainstorming sessions based on different aspects of the main topic. A practical exercise (form and content will be discussed with every student separately) will focus on and deepen the theoretical approach to the theme: once they have identified the mechanisms that shape a chosen place / building / spatial situation within an historical urban context, students will be asked to produce a short essay (in the form of a text, a video, a series of pictures, ... ) to explain this phenomenon.
