Aim of course

Resisting expression: Analog vs Digital articulation

International Workshop 17.-21. October at
Steinhaus Graz organized bei UCLA

Teilnehmende Universitäten und Instruktoren: UCLA (Mark Mack), Akademie München (Peter Ebner), Aalto University Finnland (Kivi Sotamaa), TU Wien (Kristina Schinegger, Stefan Rutzinger), u.a.

The topic of this years workshop and seminar will explore the legacy and the future of architectural expression. Guenther Domenig, the creator of the Steinhaus used sketches and poetic language to express his ideas in is building process. Many architects around the world are still use some kind of analog expression, drawings or models to facilitate their creative ideas. Yet students, architects and professionals have abandoned this process totally by switching solely to computer aided and parametric design practices, some even proclaiming this process similar to the impact of the International Style of Architecture in the last Century.

Architectural Expression lives through the personalization of techniques and varied architectural approaches.
Are we abandoning one of the most identified tool of architectural expression, the architects hand as a interpreter of an architectural mind and process?

Are the practice of sketching and model making an outmoded and nostalgic idea which has no more meaning today?
Is the reliance on digital and parametric practices predetermining the outcome leading to an inherent sameness of architecture?

Are the digital tools of today the primitives for a new form of expression? Is digitalism sensual and analogism ludite?

These are some the questions which will be explored during this short workshop. Using the iconic presence of the SteinHaus and its analog history of drawings and models as a starting point, the workshop will built around analysis and discussion to break new grounds in understanding the media of architectural expression.

Invited guests and students will engage in an exchange of ideas in an environment which seems to come out of a digital expression, but was produced with analog means The format will be instructional, with students and presenters engaged in the topic with small presentations and discussion groups.

The result will be summarizing statements and presentations.
