After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

1. understand essential features of vernacular architecture.

a. identify region-specific building typologies (based on a selected object).
b. understand specific traditional building techniques (based on a selected object).
c. critically reflect on methods of conservation (based on a selected object).

Subject of course

Students learn about culture-related characteristics of vernacular architecture. Based on a selected object, students will delve deeply into regionally typical layouts, materials and constructions. A visit to the Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art (Volkskundemuseum Wien) and to the exhibition “Crafty Hands” at the Schallaburg strengthen the discourse on the interrelation between crafts and vernacular architecture.

The introduction to the course will take place on Thursday the 3.10.2018 at 17:00 CT in the lecture room 14 (main building, staircase III, 3rd floor).
