Vernacular architecture comprises an indigenous architecture. It is based on independent traditions rather than emerging from an architect's planning. Since the publication "Architecture without architects" by Bernhard Rudofsky (1964) at the latest, the subject of vernacular architecture has also met with interest in architectural circles and today it represents an essential component of the discursive investigation into architecture.
The essence of vernacular architecture is determined by different cultural and natural influences. In addition to social or economic criteria, the availability of certain raw materials is of crucial importance for its evolution. The knowledge of properties and methods of processing of certain materials is a fundamental aspect of vernacular architecture, which is explained in this seminar with national and international examples.
Objective of the course:
Teaching of a basic understanding of vernacular architecture and of individual components affecting its essence. Students are capable of understanding and classifying certain materials and processing techniques in their vernacular context. They are also confronted with opportunities for reuse and the modernization of building traditions.
The seminar "Vernacular Architecture" will be held with yearly changing thematic priorities.
Students are concerned with certain building materials and processing techniques under the above mentioned priorities. Excursiions to open-air museums and worshops will be discussed at the beginning of this course. Focus of this course is on materials and their processing under the following aspects:
- architectural history
- documentation
- material properties
- processing of materials
- modern adaptation
