World Heritage Sites in Austria
In 1972, UNESCO ratified the World Heritage Convention with 193 states to create an instrument for the protection of the cultural and natural heritage of the world.
Currently, there are nine sites in Austria of outstanding universal value enlisted in the World Heritage List. Each state that hosts a World Heritage Site committed themselves to obtain this global value through legal framework conditions.
In many cases, this means a challenge for architecture and planning, as it could be observed in the controversial discussion concerning the Hotel at Heumarkt in Vienna in recent years.
