Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to:

  • fundamentally describe the construction management process in the execution of construction projects,
  • explain the steps of construction procedures,
  • calculate the resource consumption of different construction methods and
  • select construction methods according to functional, qualitative, quantitative, financial and ecological aspects.

Subject of course

The course shall give an overview about the production process, the means of production and the production costs for construction works. All important machinery will be presented in detail focussing on conditions of use and possibilities of use. For the choice of suitable machinery and methods necessary decision criteria such as performance and costs will be pointed out. A representative choice of calculations examples are prepared for independent studies and may be worked through within the lecture. A.)Construction methods - theoretical basics - earth works - hydraulic engineering - civil engineering - drill and blast techniques - tunnelling - materials transportation - materials processing - materials production - materials application - shuttering, scaffolding and reinforcing auxiliary methods B.) Examples of calculation - site installation - earth works - civil engineering - drill and blast - shuttering, scaffolding and concreting

Teaching methods

Construction methods are presented, compared and explained using practical examples. The lecture will be illustrated with numerous videos. Current publication and product novelties in the field of construction process engineering and construction machinery are discussed.

Examination modalities

Working time: 60 min

Mode: The exam is done on the computer with TUWEL and includes only theoretical questions. Questions are arranged as assignment questions, cloze texts with given choices, multiple-choice questions and questions that have to be answered with "right" or "wrong". Questions can include a picture to which the question relates. There are no questions to answer with free text. There are no calculations to perform, so using a calculator is not allowed.

Classification: Allocation at a specific time slot (of 60 min), within the time frame specified during the examination, takes place after the end of the registration deadline and can then be seen in TISS.
