After successful completion of the course, students are able to

• name and explain the structure, scope and benefits of certifiable environmental management systems (ISO 14001, EMAS)
• structure and implement the organizational measures necessary to achieve environmental goals for an organization
• to name the tools for setting up an environmental management system for companies and municipal institutions and to create parts of it by themselves
• to name the content of a waste management concept and an environmental statement and to create parts of it by oneself.

• Basics of the material flow management as part of the operational environmental protection
• Advantages of certifiable environmental management systems for companies and municipal institutions
• Standard points of ISO14001 and structure of certification according to EMAS, differences and similarities
• Legal bases of the Austrian waste management and legal register for environmental management systems
• Substance register for chemicals, safety data sheets and operating instructions
• Communication of environmental topics
• Presentations of selected topics

Lecture as well as presentation by the students and joint in-depth discussion of the topics

The course provides technical basics that are helpful for an (optional) external examination to become a waste management officer according to the Austrian Waste Management Act (§11 AWG 2002).

A written exam at the end of the course and a presentation by the students on a selected topic in teamwork. The overall assessment is based on the evaluation of the exam and the presentation.
