Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to perform simple but important chemical and biological tests in both the field of water chemistry and the assessment of wastewater treatment plants.

Subject of course

Experimental course in the laboratory of the institute focussing on the following topics:

Neutralization; pH-measurement using different methods; Tillmann's equilibrium; chemical water- and wastewater analysis: adsorption to activated carbon; flocculation and precipitation; detoxification of heavy metals and cyanids.

Demonstration of advanced analytical technics (UV, AAS, ICP, HPLC etc.), microscopy and characterisation of activated sludge; stabilization of sludges, oxigen uptake measurements for carbon and nitrogen metabolism; measurement of the oxigenation capacity of aeration equipment.

Teaching methods

Practical work in the chemical laboratory
