Aim of course

The focus is on the transfer of waste management technology, case studies from Southeastern Europe. The block lectures will be given by two guest professors from Novi Sad University in Serbia in June 2018 during one week . The detailed days are: Monday, 17.06.2019 until Wednesday 19.06.2019, daily from 14.00-18.00 hours. Presence is mandatory, and students will write a term paper for their grade.

The objectives are:

  • General waste management terminology (principles and goals of waste management)
  • Illustration and analysis of waste management systems (material and substance flows; waste management technologies; economical boundary conditions and financing waste management)
  • Evaluation of waste management systems and technologies

Subject of course

  1. Introduction into technology transfer and solid waste management
  2. Technical features of waste mangement in South East Europe: waste collection systems, waste generation and composition patterns, waste disposal practices
  3. EU legislation and the future of waste management in South East Europe
  4. Illustration and analysis of the status quo of solid waste management by material flow analysis (MFA): case study Serbia
  5. Student's work and presentation: design, illustration, and assessment of scenarios for future waste management in Serbia
  6. Case studies on successful and unsuccessful technology transfer in the field of solid waste management in Serbia

The presentation of our courses for the summer term 2019 will take place on March 5, 2019 at 09:30, lecture room 268/2, Karlsgasse 13, 1st floor. Participation is not mandatory.
