Aim of course

summer term: english spoken!

first lecture 1 March 2016, 10:00 - 11:00 Zeichensaal 15 (Karlsplatz 13, 3nd floor, stage 2)
start: 2 March 2015, Institute for Waterquality E 226, Library (Karlsplatz 13, 2nd floor, stage 1)

The main aim is an overview for engineers. Those attending should be able to be familiar with the terms and the context of water pollution control and the protection of waters

This unit of lectures is addressed to engineers; its aim is obtaining an overview what elements <interplay> in the protection of waters from impacts by man-made pressures (main applied context: EU Water Framework Directive)

Subject of course

An introductory example: How does reactive nitrogen run through the environment and what are the reasons for increased fluxes (this includes the relationship between inland waters and the sea)? / Some basic issues / Life in the biosphere and human acting / Biological aspects of aquatic ecosystems (sidestep: the energy flux of Austria in 2005) / Chemical composition of water in (natural) waters (sidestep: why summary parameters for organic substances can be summed-up only under specific circumstances for polluting discharges) / The EU WFD appears: stagnant and running waters / General overview of anthropogenic pressures and their impacts on waters (sidestep: phosphorus) / Biozoenotic elements oriented towards the assessment work under the EU WFD (an introduction of engineers to elements of hydrobiological assessment) / Pressures and impacts of untreated urban wastewater on running waters - self-purification - saprobic system - what type of assessment is asked for by the EU WFD / Water environment legislation at EU level and the EU WFD / The basics of EU WFD implementation (typology - water body delineation - monitoring - reference conditions - intercalibration) / Results of the initial assessment in implementing the EU WFD (Austria and the River Danube Basin District) / The 1st WFD River Basin Management Plan: What is needed in Austria, what are the tasks in the River Danube Basin?

Additional information
