  • Credits: 2.0
  • Type: VU Lecture and Exercise

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to

  • explain the contradictions and connections between observations, measurements and mathematical models
  • describe and perform the most important measurement techniques in hydrology, technology of instruments, field work, and planning field campaigns
  • explain the basics of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing methods in hydrology, their applications and limitations

Subject of course

1) Half-day EXCURSION to the Central Institute for Meteorology, radiosonde ascension.

Considerations for the planning of measurement networks and measurement campaigns

2) Why measure? Measurement and math. Models; Fundamentals of measurements;

Measuring instruments and measuring principles (from early to present);

Meteorology <=> Hydrology: Measurement of hydrometeorological phenomena (precipitation, temperature, humidity, radiation, ...);

3) Preparations for the second excursion (see 4) - aim of the excursion (research questions, where to go, what to do, schedule, evaluation plan)

4) EXCURSION as a field internship

5) Practical evaluation of the data measured in the field.
