Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand the science behind the practice of river engineering, to explain that science in practice - but with a critical sense - and add to or correct the science where it is seen to be deficient or unhelpful.

Subject of course

After a general Introduction, a review of energy and momentum will be given. The effects of obstacles and resistance in streams will be discussed. Steady uniform flow in prismatic channels as well as steady gradually-varied non-uniform flow are part of the course.
Moreover unsteady flow, flood routing and reservoir routing are explained during the lectures.
Also measurement techniques (Hydrography/Hydrometry) will be demonstrated.
Finally an important part of the course will be loose-boundary hydraulics (sediment stability and transport) and water quality.

Teaching methods

Lectures play a dominant role, as their intention is to give students an overview of an advanced subject. Where possible practical exercises will be carried out.
