In hydraulic- and dam engineering in a wide field modern design- and analysis methods are used. The engineer on one hand should become familiar with these methods but also be trained to choose the problem-oriented "right" one.
Based on the physico-mathematical understanding and formulation of fluid- and structural mechanics problems in the field of civil engineering hydraulics especially numerical methods are presented and discussed. Generally spoken it is a matter of the discretization of the differential-equation -system charcterizing the problem. Numerical methods to meet these requirements as Finite Difference Method, Finite Element Methods (Ritz and Galerkin related) are presented. The participants have the possibility for a training on hand of available FE-software (SOLVIA; FLONET; FIDAP; FRAC_DAM, etc.). Furthermore, a brief introduction into CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) is given, the basic equations of fluid dynamics and common turbulence models are presented. The second part of this lecture focuses on the application of CFD in the field of hydraulic engineering.
