Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • develop constructive solutions in dam construction
  • adapt a dam structure to the given boundary conditions
  • basically analyze and develop dam construction projects

Subject of course

Basic design and construction solutions for embankment dams, dam foundation engineering, dam fill materials and properties, dam sealing elements, filter and drainage zones, dam slopes and stabilty criteria, foundation grouting

Teaching methods

The VO Dammbau (embankment dam construction) is held online using the following mode:

  • A freely accessible video conference platform is offered
  • Preliminary discussion, approx. 1 hr
  • Lecture with 6 modules (approx.. 1- 2 hrs/ module), 2 modules at a time with 3 appointments
  • Certificate based on an oral exam or alternatively by creating your own individual project. This must be clarified in advance with the lecturers.

Examination modalities

The exam takes place orally and online after making an appointment in the preliminary discussion or individually with the lecturers. Alternatively, the individual project can be presented online in combination with a final discussion.

The oral exam contains approx. 3 questions per person. Alternatively, the lecturers assess the individual project based on the quality of the work and the online presentation.

Required technical equipment for participation in the course and examination:

Apart from a device for video conference, no further technical equipment is required.
