Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to become familiar with Structural Hydraulic Engineering projects such as High-Head Power-Plants, Run-Off-River Power Plants and Flood Protection Systems.

Subject of course

Discussion of selected topics in Hydraulic- and Dam Engineering from a practical point of view.  A wide field of hydraulic engineering projects covering all the separate units  - Power-Plants, Flood Protection Systems etc.- in detail are presented and discussed. Excursions to an Austrian Hydro-Power-Plant (Freudenau-Vienna) and the Vienna-Flood-Protection-System complete this lecture.

Teaching methods

The lecture takes place via overhead projectors with detailed explanations on the blackboard. Interactive exchange between students and the lecturer in the form of questions and discussions are postulated.

Due to the prescribed 'Lockdown' for Universities in the direction of 'distance learning', these lecture cannot take place at the institute with the personal participation of all interested in.

These lecture is very interactive regarding questions and discussions of the participants - the lecture notes are designed in this regard.

However, these reasons are not sufficient to hold these lectures in Presenz-Teaching.

Examination modalities

The course assessment is carried out on the one hand in the form of the design of a double curved arch dam with the aid of 'preliminary design' concepts and secondly by the engagement in the interactive exchange within the block lecture.
