Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • explain the basics of geotechnical aspects in landfill construction and in the securing and remediation of contaminated sites,
  • distinguish behaviour, types and transport of pollutants in the subsoil,
  • describe test methods,
  • explicate the legal and planning bases for contaminated site remediation projects,
  • explain methods for eliminating or securing pollutants from the subsoil,
  • carry out rough risk assessments.

Subject of course

Investigation of the subsoil in the area of new landfills and contaminated sites, site investigations and evaluation of old and new landfills, design construction and monitoring of waste deposits, soil improvement, bottom liners, cut-off walls, slope engineering (for waste), stability of waste deposits, drainage of lechate, embedded pipes and shafts, detection and securing or remediation of contaminated sites, geosynthetics, capping of waste deposits, soil and groundwater cleaning, environmental and risk assessment, expertises, interdisciplinary cooperation.

Teaching methods

Introduction to the geotechnical aspects of landfill construction and the securing and remediation of contaminated sites, methods of remediation of contaminated sites using ground engineering technologies as well as methods for eliminating and securing pollutants from the subsoil.
