Aim of course

Understanding of the interaction rock-structure (underground openings, foundations, slopes, rockfill dams). Prerequisites for semi-empirical design. Bridging the gaps between theory and practice.

Subject of course

Differences between rock and soil. Differences between rock samples and rock mass (scale effects, fissures, bedding etc.). Investigation methods, rock classifications. Permeability of rock, laboratory and field tests, rock parameters. Design and calculation of tunnels and galleries. Theoretical idealisations and application of proper theories. Methods of tunnel excavation and tunnel support. New Austrian Tunnelling method, tunnel boring machines (TBM's), tunnelling under compressed air, undercrossing of building in urban areas. Examples of underground engineering, case histories. Specific cases ot twin tunnels, underground interjunctins, large rock caverns. Rock bolding and nailing, (long) prestressed rock anchors; rock slopes, rock blasting (to gain rock aggregates for earthworks etc.), foundations in rock, rock retaining structures. In situ measurements, monitoring. Case histories.
