Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to explain design models describing the bearing behaviour under normal and shear forces, bending and torsional moments and to apply the models on construction elements close to reality, and to explicate the process chain for the fabrication and erection of steel structures. Thereby, these students feature the skill to dimension and to verify construction steel elements.


Subject of course

After introduction (steel engineering, material science, process chain, safety concepts), dimensioning and verification methods for serviceability limit states and ultimate limit state comprising fatigue are presented. The applicable methods derive from theoretical models.

Teaching methods

Lectures on the theoretical principles as well as the application of mechanical models needed for the design of steel structures.
