After successful completion of the course, students are able to create technically consistent initial designs of typical cross-sections for railway, road, or pedestrian bridges. Students can understand the flux of forces for load transfer. Furthermore, they are able to develop mounting concepts using essential assembly techniques (crane erection, longitudinal shifting, transverse shifting, floating) or combinations thereof.
History of bridge costruction. Fundamentals concerning the planning, analysis, construction, aesthetics of bridges. Typical problems of bridge construction are illustrated considering planned and / or built structures. All current steel, concrete and composite bridge systems are discussed. Besides the spectacular great constructions, particular importance is given to small bridges: such bridges have their specific problems and easily can be encountered by young engineers both in a planning office and on site.
Lectures on a selection of basics of bridge construction: design, fabrication, erection.
Lectures on the basics of the general project of a bridge situated on a traffic route.
Supply and discussion of papers containing references to the calculation of selected static problems.
A lecture on Concrete Bridges in English will be held in the summer term at the Department for Structural Concrete.
