Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to…

  • determine the degree of static determinacy for plane and spatial beam, frame and truss constructions.
  • calculate and graphically represent support reactions as well as internal force curves of statically determined plane and spatial beam, frame and truss constructions using different methods (direct integration of the load function, equilibrium considerations, principle of virtual work) and the necessary mathematical aids (linear algebra and analysis).
  • derive the differential relationship between load and the corresponding internal forces for plane straight and curved beams and to set up corresponding mathematical formulations.
  • derive moments of area of different orders for simple cross-section shapes and for composite cross-sections.
  • formulate mechanical working principles for simple rigid and elastic systems.
  • analyse given potential functions and derive their equivalent spring stiffnesses.
  • explain the basic concept of Coulomb friction and perform simple calculations concerning static friction.

Subject of course

Moments of a Plane Area and their Rules of Transformation.  Statics: Forces, Systems of Forces, Equilibrium, Statics of Simple Structures (Beams, Frames, Trusses). Mechanical Work, Power, Potential Energy. Principle of Virtual Work. Conservative Mechanical Systems.
