This course is in at least 1 assigned curriculum part of the STEOP.

2019W, VU, 1.5h, 2.0EC, to be held in blocked form

Properties

  • Semester hours: 1.5
  • Credits: 2.0
  • Type: VU Lecture and Exercise

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand the load carrying behavior of tensegrity systems as well as the load carrying behavior of geodesic domes. Students are capabable of designing and constructing such structural systems.

Subject of course

A short historical overview shows the development of structures based on the tensegrity principle. Also, geodesic domes are described in detail. The load-carrying behavior of such systems is explained in terms of the flow of forces and it is compared to other, less efficient, structural systems.

A practical part includes design and the actual construction of a tensegrity system or geodesic dome in model size.
