After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

Focus of this course is the statical as well as seismic design of new masonry buildings starting from the basics of masonry engineering with explanations of the components block and mortar, up to the design of a structure according Eurocode 6 and Eudocode 8. Different seismic design procedures for masonry structures (simplified masonry, simplified response spectra method, response spectra method and finally nonlinear Push-Over method will be explained from the basics of structural dynamics till the application on a practical example. To round up this course, experimental laboratory methods to determine the statical as well as dynamical properties and also the direction of the future of Eurocodes in this field will be presented.

Subject of course

The course encompasses the following thematic issues:

  • masonry general (historical and geographical development, brickwork, block- and mortar types)
  • statical numerical design of masonry
  • statical design of masonry (experimental laboratory methods)
  • dynamical design of masonry  - earthquake (numerical design)
  • dynamical design of masonry  - earthquake (experimental laboratory methods)
  • in Situ Tests for masonry constructions (experimental in Situ Tests)
  • outlook of European standardization situation

In a design project, alternative structural systems (global structural system and connections) will be designed in team work, calculated and critically analyzed.
