Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

solve a task concerning building construction, consider aspects of construction, design and physics as well as current research topics.

Subject of course

This year's research seminar takes place in cooperation with the University of Cagliari (Italy). A total of 4 presentations on current research topics (language: English, held online) will be held.

The 4 topics deal with the following issues:

  1. Seismic consolidation with exoskeleton. The retrofitting of existing building to recent seismic standards requires the application of strategies that reduce the intrusive nature of reinforcement inside them. Design strategies concerning structure placed on facades (exoskeletons) are developed and will be explored in some practical cases of retrofitting of existing buildings.2.
  2. Reinforcement of structures subjected to brittle failure. Recent and sudden collapse in existing reinforced concrete structure, which are often occurred without any premonitory phenomena, show the importance of preventing, with appropriate reinforcement and predictive models, this kind of failure. Some real cases of design solutions and structural analysis, mainly of reinforced concrete structures, are here illustrated
  3. Safety assessment and reinforcement of reduced span bridge in case of extreme weather events.More and more intense and frequent rainstorms with its significant consequences raise the attention on the vulnerability of the territory and the related infrastructures. In many cases bridges, located on minor waterways, are exposed to violent flooding with disastrous consequences. A procedure for the vulnerability of existing bridges presented along with some types of interventions.
  4.  Experimental tests on shear capacity of G-FRP beams. The degradation of reinforced concrete members induced by corrosion is driving the research of alternative reinforcement. Among these, the bars made of glass fiber composites (G-FRP) offer interesting performances. The current capacity models of three international standard are discussed here by comparing them with the outcomes of an experimental campaign
