Aim of course
Recognition of the importance of the cooperation between geologists and civil engineers; general overview of the subject; application of geological and rock mechanical basics in practice; overview of the most important literature; understanding of the behaviour of the material "rock" as a discontinuous media.
Subject of course
Basics: difference between rock and rock mass; failure mechansims and rheological behaviour (strength, strain) of rock and jointed rock; mathematical / numerical methods to model discontinuous media; effects of water in the rock mass; experiments. Rock slopes: failure mechanisms; mechanical model; numerical models and back analysis; measurements; methods to increase the stability. Foundation: force propagation in anisotropic, inhomogenous and discontinuous media; failure mechanisms of foundations; stability problems; measurements. Tunnels; relation rock mass - tunnel; analytical and numerical modells in order to assess the stability; excavation methods; reconstructions of tunnels
