Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to determine from CT data, via micromechanical models, mechanical properties of biological tissue, and to generate, visualize, and analyse simple CT based FEA simulation models.

Subject of course

This course provides an introduction to the numerical simulation of biomaterials, tissue and tissue-implant systems. The focus will be on continuum, continuum micromechanics and homogenization models. Translation of medical images into geometrical models and material properties is presented, the finite element method is reviewed and specialized to biomechanical models. Practical applications in orthopaedics/tissue engineering.

Teaching methods

Lecture at the blackboard; presentation of slide collection and selected scientific papers; open discussion with the students

Mode of examination

Immanent
