Provide computational tools for quantifying the mechanical properties of biomaterials and biostructures. The students will be able to generate computational models from digital images, apply material properties and boundary conditions, analyze them with the finite element method, and interpret the obtained results.
This course provides an introduction to the numerical simulation of biomaterials, tissue and tissue-implant systems. The focus will be on continuum, continuum micromechanics and homogenization models. Translation of medical images into geometrical models and material properties is presented, the finite element method is reviewed and specialized to biomechanical models. Practical applications in orthopaedics/tissue engineering.
