Properties

  • Semester hours: 2.5
  • Credits: 3.5
  • Type: VO Lecture

Aim of course

The students are to get acquainted with modern concepts of applied mechanics, necessary to describe reliably the material behavior of complicated civil engineering materials such as soils or concrete where fluids in one or several pore spaces often play a paramount role. The focus is on sound understanding of underlying physical concepts and the mathematical description. This understanding is indispensable when solving challenging engineering problems (e.g. in geoengineering) by commercial software packages.

Subject of course

- fundamentals of continuum mechanics -- representative volume element - thermodynamics of porous continua - poroelasticity - poroplasticity - fundamentals of continuum micromechanics - applications in geo and bioengineering (e.g. tunneling, orthopaedics, wood engineering)
