Innovation Project 2 – Detailed Content:

1. Storytelling & Slide Deck Writing (lecturer: Alex Pinter, Thomas Schranz)

CLASS CONTENT:
For startups, it’s important to convey a coherent message in easy-to-understand terms while pitching your company. You usually only have a couple of minutes to make a connection and a strong impression on investors. Therefore, how to convey your message is prior to convincing them.
This lecture is all about learning that good, structured stories deliver a competitive edge because it’s easier to attract any audience - whether they’re customers, suppliers, partners, employees or investors. How to tell an engaging story and where to put special focus on is the main task of this course. Startups need to hit the emotional level that will really make a presentation fly - great pitches share certain characteristics that students should be aware of.

CLASS OBJECTIVES:
The primary objectives of the course are to enable you to:

  • Dive into different pitch frameworks and application forms of high-profile accelerator programs in the USA.
  • Learn about storylining and Minto structures (also for slides!)
  • Realize that storytelling is not synonymous with storylining.
  • Understand the principles of stickiness.
  • Recognize that most listeners will remember 3 or 4 key points from a pitch at most.
  • Think bigger and master the art of pitching with great story vertebrae (Y Combinator-like).

To realize these objectives, students will become familiar with the most popular pitch frameworks, best practices as well as tips and tricks for slide deck writing (slides). This course will equip you with the tools and insights to create complete yet concise presentations - hence, an easy-to-follow storyline with great clarity. By the end of the course, students should have a strong understanding that there is no ultimate guide to raising money or creating the perfect pitch (which does not exist anyway). It aims to give an overview about the complex art of pitching, its relation to storytelling and to provide students with useful hacks and real-life examples to improve their current pitch decks.

OVERVIEW OF CLASS TOPICS:
Topics covered include pitch frameworks (incl. best practice presentation decks), storylining, storytelling, logic in writing and thinking (Minto), SUCCESs and GAME framework and thus, AngelPad, Y Combinator, Techstars as well as the newly hyped Clubhouse app.

TEACHING STYLE:
We greatly enjoy doing, teaching, and continually learning about slide deck writing and storylining and make each class as lively, interactive and hands-on as possible. A great attitude, creativity, and a sense of thinking outside-the-box are required to maximize your learnings. Feel free to ask questions at any time. We love to discuss and reflect on things.
As serial entrepreneurs, each of us has over twelve years of experience developing startups - in Europe as well as in Silicon Valley. Hence, the course is designed to be very practical so that students can apply what they learn in class to a wide variety of products and services. We will use case studies to guarantee effective learning (if required).

2.  2nd Milestone-presentation: Storytelling presentation (various lecturers):

The project teams will present their business project in the form of storytelling. Students gained input on the theoretical content in a 2 day workshop before. A jury of various mentors will offer feedback and challenge the teams with questions.

3. Feedback Session (lecturer: Bernhard Holzer)
In this workshop student will shortly present their start-up ideas and receive 1:1 feedback from a general and PR perspective on how to improve further.

4. Pitch Training (lecturer: Daniel Cronin)

What makes a pitch a ‘perfect’ pitch. Get to know the success factors of a great pitch. Get insights about how to implement a captive story in your pitch.  Learn the techniques from the ‘Pitch-Professor’ himself.

1:1 Pitch Training Session

  • Present your pitch
  • Get individual feedback

5. 3rd Milestone-presentation: Extended pitch deck (various lecturers):

The project teams will present their Extended Pitch Desks for their projects including all relevant topics (problem, solution, validation, market, competition, business model, finances, go-to-market-strategy, team etc.). A jury of various mentors will offer feedback and challenge the teams with questions

6. 4th Milestone-presentation: 3-min-pitch (various lectureres):

The project teams will present their 3-min-pitch-deck which they will also present at the Demo Day. A jury of various mentors will offer feedback and challenge the teams with questions.

8. Demo Day, final presentation

The  Extended Studies on Innovation concludes with the Demo Day, where the students pitch their innovation projects to a jury of potential investors.
