Aim of course

This course will explore the fundamental research methods in Computer Science. It aims to provide a basic understanding of important resarch methods and how to critically apply these to advanced research.

Subject of course

This course consists of 5 parts:

  1. Introduction to methodologies and paradigms
  2. Overview of formal methods
  3. Overview of quantitative methods
  4. Overview of qualitative methods
  5. Overview of design methods

 

Additional information

This is a Fundamental PhD Course of the Faculty of Informatics for doctoral students. 

First-year doctoral students are advised to take this course, as its content may help them to prepare their PhD proposal.

Doctoral students in Computer Science have admission priority to this course.

Examination modalities

Course parts 2-5 will be graded with an assignment for each part. The final grade is calculated as the average grade of the assignments.

Students will be graded provided that the following requirements are fulfilled:

  • Attendance to the lectures (if attendance is not possible, if should be communicated via email to the lecturer).
  • Submission of all assignments. The assignments should be written in English and submitted via TUWEL.
