Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to

- actively follow presentations of scientists about their ongoing research activities, and ask relevant questions

- elaborate a concise summary on a scientific presentation

- enumerate current trends in computer science and competently engage in a discussion on them

Subject of course

Guest professors invited by the TU Wien Informatics Doctoral School will give a (typically) 45-minute talk about their research area

It seems highly probable that we can offer 4 more talks in this summer term, so a total of 6 talks during this study year 2023/24. All details about the planned talks will be announced as soon as possible here.

So far, there are three talks scheduled, namely

Wolfgang Reisig
The role of Modeling in Informatics
April 10, 16:00 c.t. FAV HS1 Helmut Veith

Gordana Dogig-Crnkovic
Learning Intelligent Computing From Living Cells
May 15, 16:00 c.t. EI8

Konrad Rieck
June 24, 16:00 c.t., FAV HS1 Helmut Veith
details will follow soon

Viola Schiaffonati
The need for philosophy in an AI-dominated future
June 27, 18:00, online (link will be provided later)

Teaching methods

Guest professors invited by the TU Wien Informatics Doctoral School will give a 45-minute talk about their research areas. Such an event typically takes 90 minutes, including welcome, talk and discussion; but depending on the specific situation this can vary.

Examination modalities

The plan is to have 6 talks in total during this study year 2023/24 (two have already been in the winter term, at least four are following in the summer term).

Preferably, students attend 4 talks, choose 3 of those for their report and give a summary of at least 2 pages for each.

Students who can only attend 3 talks also pick 3 talks for their summary, but this summary must comprise at least 3 pages for each talk.

Students will be graded provided that the following requirements are fulfilled:

  • Attendance to at least 4 talks (to be proven).
  • Submission of assignment.

Talks are offered both in winter term 2023/24 and summer term 2024, and any combination of all those may be chosen (but the course will definitely end after the summer term, a further combination with talks from the winter term 24/25 will not be possible).

The reports must be written in English and in latex (a template is provided in TUWEL). The deadline for submission of the assignment is July 31st at 23:55h through TUWEL.
