This course addresses theoretical concepts and practical methods for creative idea generation in technical and socio-economic design processes. It aims to enable course participants to generate ideas quickly and under time pressure. Participants will learn to understand, select, adapt and apply creativity techniques, decision-making and idea selection techniques from an individual, small, and large group perspective. Course participants will learn to understand the challenges of designing creative environments, teams, and work condition and how to remove barriers to creativity. The course will focus on the special challenges of technology and innovation.

This lecture will cover the following topics:

Erich Prem is CEO of eutema GmbH. He holds a doctorate in informatics (TU Vienna) and a doctorate in philosophy (University of Vienna). He graduated in managerial economics (Donau University). He is an initiator and co-ordinator of international projects in research and technology development with a focus on information and communication technology. Erich co-ordinated the FEAT EU project on art/science/technology collaboration and runs a platform on Digital Humanism. He was a guest researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a researcher at the Austrian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence.
Methods:
Individual study, exercises of creativity techniques as well as presentation and discussions in focus groups. The courses will use individual and group exercises; case studies serve to exemplify key situation where creativity techniques can be applied and where creative processes and settings need to be managed. A 2-day workshop is designed to exemplify the generation of good ideas under pressure. Students will also implement short tests of innovative solutions and approaches to receive quick feedback on their ideas.
Course design:
The course is strongly interactive and requires participants to actively contribute, develop, and assess ideas for innovation during the course and in practical exercises. Course work will include team exercises and a few individual exercises culminating in a 2-day intense workshop at the end. Selected topics will be covered in lectures, but the main thrust of the course is hands-on.
