Inhalt der Lehrveranstaltung

In the face of growing global competition and increasing rates of change, companies are challenged evermore by the need to respond to a rapidly changing market. To succeed in today’s business setting, companies, and especially the individuals that run them, need to adopt not only managerial but entrepreneurial thinking, and combine it with well-executed innovation processes.

While innovation is one of the most discussed topics with respect to organisational growth and competitive advantage, it is also seen as a highly complex issue faced by many managers and entrepreneurs. This course provides participants with an introduction to how successful entrepreneurs create opportunities by thinking differently than traditional managers. It exposes participants to the concepts, practices, and tools of innovation, defined as the discovery and creation of new products, services, and markets. Course participants will learn to utilize cutting edge tools, such as effectual logic, lean startup processes, design thinking and corporate venturing.

***Content decription***

In the first part of the course, participants will develop a deeper understanding about the entrepreneurial mindset and its importance to both new and existing companies. This will be followed with an exploration of innovation and the innovation organisation including innovation culture in context of markets and corporations.

The second day will deal with the creative state, the secret to ideation and how this drives the thinking that underpins innovation. It will then investigate the sources of innovation, where good concepts come from and what this means for startups, SMEs and companies.

The third part of the course will focus on open innovation and the processes that underpin it and then investigate how leadership affects innovation. The objective of this section is to clarify the principles about leadership, why leadership is important for innovation, discuss different leadership models and their impact on innovation. This will be supplemented with insights into effective management of innovation and on different methods and tools for successful management. Participants will understand the do's and don’ts for effective management of innovation by observing the rise of Amazon, and learn how to drive it from a leadership position.

The fourth part will focus on social innovation and how regional innovation systems and ecosystems underpin successful innovation endeavours. This will be followed by a session that looks at corporate venturing and the world-renowned approaches to innovations taken by organisations globally. 

The course will empower participants to contribute their own experience, apply their knowledge and challenge their thinking. Methods of engagement include lectures, discussion, exercises, readings, short cases, and participant presentations. The course runs over four different days and is designed to be fast-paced, interactive, and engaging. 

Participants will be expected to actively participate in course discussions and events, and to critically and productively engage one another in course exercises and presentations. Each morning we will have a debrief session to review what was learned the previous day and how it can apply to participants on the job situations.



Todd Davey is an Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship at the Institut Mines Télécom-Business School (IMTBS) in France and also a visiting researcher at Imperial College (UK), Technical University of Vienna (AUT) and the University of Adelaide (AUS) in the topics of entrepreneurship and innovation. Formerly a Senior Manager with Deloitte Australia’s Technology Commercialisation Group and part of the executive team for one of Australia’s fastest growing tech start-ups in the 2000s, Todd continues operating in the business world as co-founder of the Innovative Futures Institute (IFI), a Spanish boutique consultancy. Todd is the author of the book ‘Entrepreneurship at Universities’, co-editor of the Future Universities Thoughtbook series, a Director at the University-Industry Innovation Network (UIIN) and the creator of TechAdvance™, a tool for evaluating technologies. Todd is currently the Director of the SEED Entrepreneurship Master as part of the Grand Ecole programme at IMTBS.


The course will mix theoretical input with hands on exercises and experiences as well as group discussions. In addition, the attendees will learn about effective tools underpinned by a proven blueprint for practical work on innovation. The students will reconsider his or her own personal approach of being an effective leader of innovation activities and develop an own individual roadmap for implementing innovations.
