2012S, VU, 2.0h, 3.0EC

Properties

  • Semester hours: 2.0
  • Credits: 3.0
  • Type: VU Lecture and Exercise

Aim of course

After the course the students should be able to organize and carry out the research process for scientific problems in computer science and business informatics, to communicate and discuss their findings in a team and to learn from criticism and interaction.

They will also obtain an overview about different approaches in the research process.

Subject of course

We consider the research spiral that iterates the loop: -vague problem -problem analysis and specification -account of available knowledge -invention and verification of useful knowledge -development of a verified method/algorithm on the basis of knowledge -application and critical analysis of the results.

In this course, the intellectual process from a research question (problem specification, project definition, ...) to the solution is described and important intellectual, heuristic, organizational, and psychological techniques and suggestions for the process as a whole and individual parts of the process are presented.
The techniques are then applied and trained for the case of the PhD theses projects of the students.

Additional information

This is a fundamental course of Vienna PhD School of Informatics. It will be hold by Univ. Prof. Dr. Bruno Buchberger.
