After an introduction to scientific methods applied in Business Informatics, six research areas demonstrating the state of research in Business Informatics at VUT are introduced, which are Model-based Decision Support, Digital Preservation, Model Engineering, Business Process Management, Social Software, and Software Engineering.

Aim: to discuss the notion of business informatics and related terms in various schools of research and to introduce scientific methods applied in business informatics.
Subject: Definition of business informatics, information systems, and management information systems, also in the realm of various master curricula worldwide. Introduction to design science and behaviour science.
09.11. Business Process Management (Prof. Huemer)
Aim: The lecture on Business Process Management focuses on the essential methods and techniques that IT and business people require to analyze, describe, and redesign their business processes.
Subject: The lecture provides background information on the trend towards business process centric system design. Furthermore, it elaborates on business process theory and highlights popular graphical and non-graphical languages for business processes.
16.11. Model-based Decision Support (Prof. Haunschmied)
Aim: The aim of this lecture is a short introduction into quantitative methods in Operations Management. Subject: The focus is on models on the strategic and tactical levels to aid in and, on the operational level, to automate decision making. To do this we begin to discuss analysing decision problems by mathematical and simulation models.
23.11. Digital Preservation - From Data Availabilty to Business Continuity (Prof. Rauber)
Aim: to provide an understanding of the challenges underlying the long-term availability and accessibility of digital information and processes. Subject: Introduction to Digital Preservation (Layers of threat, mitigation strategies); specific challenges to business and e-science processes as well as legal and technical approaches to resolve them.

Aim: Fostering the awareness of the potential of social software for e-business.
Subject: Discussion of features of social software and their application for e-business.
07.12. Research Methods in Software Engineering (Prof. Biffl)
Aim: Enable students to select suitable research methods for their scientific PhD research topics/issues based on typical research issues and methods in evidence-based software engineering research.
Subject: Overview on typical software engineering research issues in business informatics; research methods with a focus on evidence-based research; critical evaluation of method suitability and limitations; application of research methods to selected research issues.
14.12. Model Engineering (Prof. Kappel)
Aim: to provide an understanding of the research areas and state of the art in model engineering
Subject: Introduction to model engineering, language engineering (metamodeling, DSLs, OCL), transformation engineering (graph transformations, QVT), model versioning, and model (co-)evolution
