Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to:

  • Explain terms, procedures, theories and concepts of (model-based) development and management of information systems.
  • Model business processes and relevant business rules.
  • Map such models to (company-wide) application systems and infrastructures (e.g. Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, business rules engines, workflow engines, low-code platforms, etc.).
  • Think in terms of models and corresponding abstractions.
  • Explain concepts of relevant methods and approaches of relevant project management (e.g. agile, evolutionary, incremental, participatory, etc.).
  • Make well-founded and risk-taking decisions regarding the structuring of information system development projects.

Subject of course

  • Basics and definitions.
  • Architecture and user perspective of information systems.
  • Planning, introduction and management of information systems.
  • Overview of relevant (company-wide) application systems and infrastructures (e.g. Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, business rules engines, workflow engines, low-code platform, etc.).
  • Modeling of business processes and rules, and their mapping to applications
  • systems and infrastructure.
  • Overview of relevant development methods (e.g. agile, evolutionary, incremental, participatory, etc.) associated with risk management, and the "human factor" in systems development.

Teaching methods

During the lectures new theory will be presented, while we will also reflect on what has been learned so-far.

This is complemented with regular exercises to enable students to apply the concepts they have learned during the lectures in a more practical setting.
