Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to

  • understand the history and future of payment
  • have a basic understanding of current and future technologies regarding digital and cash payment
  • understand organizational mechanics of money, banking, and payment 
  • have a deeper understanding of a chosen specific domain of payment
  • be able to apply the knowledge in a real-world project.

Subject of course

Challenged by emergent disruptors money, banking and payment are in a rapid transition. Looking at the history and presence of money and payment, the lecture gives an introduction into the technological enablers and the future of banking, payment, and money. Giving informed insights into economics, technical and legal crunch points of current and future technologies, but also organizational mechanics of money, banking, and payment, a basic understanding of the domain is taught. This is needed in order to be able to make informed decisions and to deepen the understanding of monetary systems in general.

Topics may include:

  • history of payment - past and future
  • roles and general architectures of payment
  • payment using modern technologies (e.g. digital wallets, phone and mobile payments, cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin or Ethereum)
  • regulatory aspects in payment (e.g. PSD II, GDPR).

Teaching methods

  • Blocked workshops containing interactive lectures with a deep understanding of real-world crunch points about banking and payment
  • Interactive discussions 
  • Additional methods will be chosen by the lecturers depending on the topic
  • Final paper or presentation
