Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to use the most important methods for scientific work. They are therefore able to evaluate their research results qualitatively and quantitatively. They can document and present the results in an appropriate manner and present them to a specialist audience. In addition, they have knowledge of the main principles of scientific ethics.

Subject of course

Overview about research approaches, introduction into scientific investigation and application of digital media.

 

Analysis of scientific work (focus on diploma theses and dissertations at TU Vienna in the area of computer science) according to the used scientific methods and their suitability to different research issues.

 

Learning of foundations and techniques of the most relevant methods like e.g. representation, benchmarking and evaluation of results, creation of criteria catalogues, related work analysis and definition of a focused problem statement, performance of studies.

 

Practical experiences with methods in form of group work by means of selected examples.

Examination modalities

The assessment is based on the results obtained in the team. These include the analysis of scientific work (focus on diploma theses / dissertations at the Vienna University of Technology in computer science), the application of common research methods and the documentation of results, the preparation and presentation of lectures, the writing of a short scientific article on a selected topic in Computer science, as well as the active discussion participation in the lecture.
