Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to judge the state of the art in the areas of the seminar and to compare such systems for their efficiency and capabilities. In the study year 2023/24 the focus is on digitalization.

Subject of course

Seminar on selected topics in media informatics; in the winter term 2023/24 this is: Gaps of Digitalization.

The students' task is to find gaps in the digitization landscape in business and society, describe them and propose solutions on how they could be reduced or automated with the help of IT. The results will be summarized in a seminar paper and presented and discussed in the group using appropriate presentation materials.

See the e-learning course and below for details.

Teaching methods

In the course of the seminar and through individual monitoring, students will be familiarized with the procedure of literature research, critical assessment and follow-up work by writing a seminar paper. Although approaches will depend on the selected topic of the paper, students should focus on scientific literature in English. Another important aspect of this seminar will be the practicing of students' presentation skills.

Important: In case of questions, please post them in the e-learning course or contact the supervisor by e-mail (horst.eidenberger@tuwien.ac.at).

Examination modalities

Students will be assessed based on their literature selection, their paper, and the presentation:

  1. Literature selection consists of several steps: (1) researching the term "digitization", (2) reflecting on personal experiences with digitization gaps, (3) short-listing appropriate gaps, (4) selecting an area, (5) reviewing literature on that gap. The results of this process must be described in the Literature Review section of the term paper. In addition, a designation of the selected gap and a list of five references must be registered in the online forum by the deadline (see below) in order to register the particular topic.
  2. The term paper must be between 5000 and 7000 words, written in English, formatted in ACM one-column style, and have at least the following sections: (1) Introduction, (2) Description of the Identified Gap + Literature Review, (3) Existing Solutions and why they are insufficient, (4) Future Solutions, (5) Summary and Critical Discussion. Additional sections are allowed, but only one additional level of subdivision. Appropriate visualization methods must be used for technical descriptions of problems and solutions. In particular, use flowcharts, UML diagrams, and similar visual languages.
  3. The presentation is to be prepared in a length of 15min. and has to be performed in English. Suitable presentation materials are to be prepared for the presentation. These are to be sent to the supervisor by the given deadline. The participation in the discussion is an essential part of the participation in the seminar. Due to the content of the seminar, a (partial) absence from the presentation is not possible. In case of illness (medical confirmation) the presentation will be postponed to the next academic year.

Submission modalities: If not otherwise stated (e.g. registration), all submissions are to be made on time by e-mail to the supervisor (horst.eidenberger@tuwien.ac.at). If you exceed the size limit, please send a link to a cloud archive.
