  • Credits: 6.0
  • Type: PR Project
  • Format: Hybrid

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to realize projects of intermediate scope in the area of Virtual- und Augmented Reality.
This involves the analysis of an individual problem through literature research and the design of an according solution, followed by the implementation of a prototypical application or artefact, and its evaluation.

Subject of course

In this course students will work on a particular problem within the topics of immersive technologies (VR, AR, MR) and 3D-interaction, either alone or in small groups.

Examples of Topics:

  •     3D interaction (e.g., mid-air interaction in immersive applications through hand tracking)
  •     Multimodal user interfaces (e.g., integration of sensor data und multisensory feedback like haptic + visual
  •     Perceptional illusions in immersive environments (e.g., rubber hand illusion, redirected reaching, or redirected walking)
  •     Video-see-through head-mounted displays (HMDs) for more flexible creation of Mixed Reality experiences (e.g., Augmented Virtuality)
  • Tracking and MoCap (e.g., tracking and object segmentation based on depth data)
  •     Use of state-of-the-art hardware (e.g., Valve Index, Vive Pro, Oculus, LeapMotion, PerceptionNeuron, Virtualizer..)

Students are invited to propose their own project ideas.

Teaching methods

The individual steps of the project will be discussed in regular meetings with the supervisor (usually ever one to two weeks).

In the first phase, a short written concept of the application or artefact is composed. In the second phase, the hardware and software components are defined and implemented. Suitable lab equipment is provided and may be borrowed, if needed. In the final project phase, the prototype of the application or artefact will be evaluated (e.g., in a small user study) and/or demonstrated, as well as presented in a short demo-video.

Examination modalities

The assessment of the final prototype and evaluation results at the time of presentation/delivery contributes most strongly to course grade (approx. 80%). The remaining evaluation is based on the quality and completeness of the concept and video (approx. 10% each).
