After successful completion of the course, students are able to

Introduction to science and the operation of the scientific community; based on a self-chosen or a given topic students practice developing a research question, performing a literature search, basic skills of scientific writing, and giving a scientific presentation

Part one:
Introductory lecture (during the first 2 weeks of the semester).

Part two (beginning in the fourth week of the semester):
Supervision by a professor; regular group meetings -
Performing a literature search; autonomously writing a short seminar paper on a self-chosen or a given topic; presentation of the seminar paper (slides)

Part 2 - Supervision by a professor; regular group meetings: Dates

Group meetings start March 23, 2020; exact dates and schedule are specified by the supervisor of your group and announced here in TISS (in the section "documents") and in TUWEL at the beginning of March.

Course enrolment
The course enrolment is a two-step procedure: Students must

• enrol for the course “Scientific Research and Writing” (general enrolment): via TISS (open from Feb 1, 2020 to March 2, 2020, 8 am)
• enrol for a specific seminar group of part 2 as well: via TISS (open from March 9, 2020 to March 13, 2020; further information in the following paragraph)

Enrolment for a specific seminar group of part 2
Please note that having enrolled for the course “Scientific Research and Writing” (general enrolment) via TISS by March 2, 2020, 8 am is a prerequisite for enrolling for a specific seminar group of part 2.

There are two different modes of enrolment for the seminar groups of part 2:

• Most seminar groups require an online-registration (Online-Anmeldung) via TISS (see link below: “Register in a Group”); the online registration is open from March 9 to March 13, 2020.
• Some few seminar groups require a registration in person (persönliche Anmeldung): Students have to attend a “mandatory informational meeting” (verpflichtende Vorbesprechung / Informationsveranstaltung) between March 9 and March 13, 2019 and to register there. For more detailed information regarding these “mandatory informational meetings” (when & where), please see the section “events” of the respective seminar groups (tab groups/“your group”/events).

Please note that the registration for a seminar group of part 2 is a registration under reserve at first. It becomes operative only after having finished part 1 of the course with a positive mark. Students will be informed about the definite confirmation of their registration by March, 23rd at the latest.

The grades of each part are weighted as follows when the overall grade of the course is calculated:
