Aim of course

To get acquainted with scientific literature and methodology in the area of multimedia and human-centered technologies. In detail, students are enabled to:

  • develop a deeper critical understanding of issues related to media and humancentered computing
  • understand and critically discuss different approaches to media and humancentered computing
  • understand the key debates about different approaches
  • identify the strengths, weaknesses and theoretical alignments of different approaches
  • be able to make principled choices matching methods and theories and approaches contexts
  • read and unterstand scientific literature from media and human-centered computing
  • present scientific information structured and comprehensible
  • discuss scientific content critically
  • write a simple scientific paper
  • partake in group discussions
  • determination, individual responsibility

Subject of course

Seminar on selected topics in the area of media informatics. Students are instructed to research relevant literature, read and discuss scientific literature critically, present scientific information in writing and speech.

Didactic background: In the course of the seminar and through individual monitoring, students will be familiarized with the procedure of literature research, critical assessment and follow-up work by writing a seminar paper. Although approaches will depend on the selected topic of the paper, students should focus on scientific literature in English. Another important aspect of this seminar will be the practicing of students' presentation skills.

Additional information

Preliminary meeting: Tuesday, 9nd October 2018, 2-4pm, seminar room 188/2 (Favoritenstrasse 9-11, 4th floor, staircase 3, green area), attendance is mandatory. The final presentations are expected to be held on 22nd January 2019. The exact timing will be announced when the number of participants is known. Further dates will be announced in this first meeting.

This course represents 3 ECTS (= 75 hours) and approximately 12 hours of these require compulsory attendance (for the final presentations, preliminary meeting, etc.).  The remaining hours are intended for the creation and completion of your written paper and presentation slides as well as individual supervision (including feedback on the seminar papers and presentations).
