Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • name and explain the essential considerations and concepts to enable access to technologies.
  • Identify and describe diversity characteristics (including disability) and evaluate the resulting challenges in access to technologies and adequately assess and reflect on their consequences in the design process.
  • Advocate for participatory and human-centred processes to adequately enable accessibility in the design of technical systems.
  • Communicate the importance of access computing for the participation of all in society.

Subject of course

  • Discuss theories and approaches that describe and demonstrate how access is limited or can be improved depending on different human characteristics and experiences such as gender, class, location and - with particular emphasis - disability and health/care, depending on the design.
  • Methods and concepts of access computing based on concrete examples
  • Assistive technologies in everyday life and design of their accessibility
  • Examination of recent academic work on this topic to learn how to identify relevant recommendations.
  • Engagement with different technological devices (desktop, virtual reality, augmented reality, tangible user interfaces, wearables, games, etc.) to develop and practice their own assessment skills.
  • Aspects of self-empowerment and efficiency enhancement through access computing

Teaching methods

Lecture content will be interwoven with small group exercises, critical reading of literature, class discussions, and design tasks. There is also group project work foreseen.
