The interaction of ubiquitous computing, fog/cloud computing, and the Internet of Things creates new possibilities, but also new challenges for the automation industry. This module provides an introduction to the problems and solutions that arise in this context, in particular with regard to the integration of heterogeneous technologies.
One of the key challenges in adapting current automation technology to new paradigms like the Internet of Things is the intrinsic complexity of current automations systems. The courses in this module deal with connection and integration of different and diverse technology domains (e.g., embedded systems and cloud computing) through unified interfaces based on Internet technology. Different approaches to information and application modeling within the industrial domain are discussed, and the particular challenges of realizing the Industrial Internet of Things are identified. In the hands-on part of the course, proof-of-concept implementations are developed, documented, and presented.
