Aim of course

Principles of Advanced Information Retrieval in different domains, primarily in text (advanced methods), but also audio retrieval; advanced methods in IR (quantum IR, ...).

Information Retrieval is the science behind search technology. Certainly, the most visible instances are the large Web Search engines, the likes of Google and Bing, but information retrieval appears everywhere we have to deal with unstructured data.

In the Advanced IR course we revisit some of the basic models of the Grundlagen des IR (188.977) course but go both deeper (learning to implement our own search system from scratch) and broader (looking at statistical semantics methods for learning the meaning of text, at distributed/federated search systems, and much more). Having previously attended  Grundlagen des IR is not mandatory and all students will be brought up to date with the basics of Search Technology.

Subject of course

Principles of IR Application domains and associated Feature Spaces, Information Extraction, Retrieval Methods, Relevance Feedback Classification Methods
