Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

Cognitive and practical competences:

- Abilitity to design, develop and evaluate own applications with multi-sensory user interfaces

- Ability to integrate state-of-the-art sensors and/or actuators with suitable software and hardware control into an application

- Ability to design user study to assess multi-sensory interfaces, from the experimental protocol to the statistical analyses of the data.

Technical background and methodological competencies: Students learn about

- Basics of human sensory perception

- New types of (2D/3D) interaction, new interfaces

- Basics of statistics for assessing multimedia interfaces

- Application of various multi-sensory technologies in different application areas and their implications for humans and society

Subject of course

Special lecture about multimedia based and non conventional user interfaces:

  • Human sensory systems (vision, hearing, haptics…)
  • Multisensory integration, and human perception-cognition-action loop
  • Multimedia Hardware: Input & Output devices for stimulating sensory systems in 2d and 3d interactions (displays, tracking, sensors…)
  • How to design an experiment to assess multimedia interfaces? (experimental protocol, hypothesis, user study, statistical analyses)
  • Human factors in the design of Human Computer Interfaces, current and future challenges
