Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to apply fundamental knowledge on human perception and interaction supported through scientific methods and design techniques. Students learn to analyse the qualitity of interaction design as well as the method-driven and structured development and evaluation of individual ideas towards mature concepts. Thereby fundamentanl knowledge and skills are acquired to guide, to analyze and to critically reflect the design of technology.

Subject of course

The course conveys technical and methodogical Knowledge about the design of interfaces and interaction, the investigation and creation of design-variants, prototyping and usability-tests, relation and distinctions to software engineering.

Conveyance of fundamental knowledge:

  • basics of human perception, form and function,
  • theoretical basics of human interaction,
  • scientific methods for gathering data
  • design-oriented methods
  • barriere-free design and assistive technologies.

Conveyance and practice of abilities and skills relating design processes:

  • structured elaboration of design processes,
  • scientific and design-oriented methods for analysis, criticism and improvement of Design,
  • influence of human aspects and theoretical concepts on design-processes,
  • recognition and disintegration of barriers for human beings in the use of technologies,
  • integration of social aspect in creative processes of technology-creation
  • innovation of interactions and interface concepts on a scientific basis
  • guidance of creative concept development; graphical and iterative

Teaching methods

Interface & Interaction Design conveys methods and knowledge for the design of interactive systems. The design-process is adressed through the percpective of various disciplines. The content comprises technical basics, organizational procedures and the psychological aspects of user interfaces and user interaction.

The presented methods are oriented on their usability within design processes. Social science methods supports the integration of human requirements and needs. Design-oriented methods support practical, iterative work.

Substantial elements are i.a.:

  • Signs, colors, shapes (graphic design, typography, information design)
  • Development and analysis of graphical interfaces
  • current developments (web-technologies, mobile devices, IoT, ...)
  • methods and approaches in the area of generating ideas and implementation
  • User-analysis and evaluation of efficiency, effectiveness and satisfaction.

Examination modalities

The final compulsory proof of performance is given by the individual and independent analysis, discussion and (re-)conception of an examplary design based on the learned content (written exam).

The overall assessment is based on the following ECTS-Breakdown:

  • lecture (introductory event): 20h
  • practical exercises are given for each lecture, which are elaborated individually and in groupwork. These examined and rated exercises are a significant part of the final grade. 40h
  • preperation for the final exam: 13h
  • final exam: 2h
