After successful completion of the course, students are able to
- understand and apply qualitative research methods in the sense of their impact on to the idea and design process
- learn and apply analytical techniques and experimental design methodologies
- implement the idea in a project and team work
- prepare and present the results as well as to reflect on the methodologies and design processes
This course deals with an evaluative implementation of an interactive and tangible system. The complexity of a design process is understood in a predefined project setting. Several research and creative methods are learned and applied, which are necessary to carry out a creative design team work during the whole term.
The course consists of a method-based group work throughout a subject for the whole semester, which will be defined in the first meeting. The lecturers will give input and additional material to each of the methods and techniques on a regular based, by stressing out the application areas and providing explanatory examples.
Students work in groups of max. 4-5 members. During the course the intermediaries and other artefacts created in the course of the design process will be presented, evaluated and accompanied by a reflection of methods applied.
The course contains the following methods and activities, to give an overview:
- Identifying the subject/theme of the project per group + group building + input on presentation techniques
- Presentation of two themes per group
- Literature review
- Interviews with experts
- Portfolio
- Video observations and analysis
- Cultural probes or provocative requisits
- Presentation of intermediary results
- Design games
- Scenarios
- Narrative posters
- Design workshops
- Group work
- Presentation of the results
- Output: Design idea
