2011S, VL, 4.0h, 6.0EC, to be held in blocked form

Properties

  • Semester hours: 4.0
  • Credits: 6.0
  • Type: VL Lecture and Laboratory Exercise

Aim of course

As mobile, wireless and sensor based technologies mature, whole new forms of interaction between people and computers become possible, especially when compared to traditional notions of HCI based on screen-based interactions. Further, these technologies open up the design space for HCI beyond traditional work-based and productivity concerns, e.g., to health, well being and reflections on daily life. This course will explore these issues via understanding the current state of the art and doing hands-on group project work with a range of mobile, wireless and sensor-based technologies.

Aims: By the end of this course students will be able to:
- identify new application areas for mobile, wireless and sensor based technologies, particularly in the area of health, well being and reflection on daily life
- understand how to interpret and adapt HCI methodologies for the design and evaluation of these applications
- critically reflect on the issues entailed in these application areas from an HCI/people perspective
- make use of mobile, wireless and sensor-based technologies to build exemplar applications
- understand and critically reflect on the technical design and deployment of these technologies.

Subject of course

NOTE: this is approved as Vertiefungsfach for Media Informatics. It may also be possible to do this in other courses - we are checking on it.

This will be a blocked course consisting of lectures, critical literature review, and hands-on group projects working with mobile wireless and sensor based technologies.

Additional information

Location:Seminar Room 187-2.
