After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand concepts of information visualization: Data and Visual Encodings, Visual and Perceptual Principles, Multivariate Data Visualization, Interactive Visual Analysis of Complex Data, Visualization of High-Dimensional Data, (Multivariate) Network Visualization, Visual Analysis of Multivariate Biological Networks, Scalable Visualizations.
Information visualization is "the use of computer-supported, interactive, visual representations of abstract data to amplify cognition". The participants shall get acquainted to the concepts and techniques of information visualization. A short general introduction to visualization is followed by a discussion on knowledge cristallization and the information visualization reference model. Afterwards important topics like focus+context, brushing, linking, interaction, network and graph visualization are treated. Guest talks by researchers working in the field are given. Through the preparation of a written report and the following implementation of a specific technique from this report, properties and advantages of information visualization shall be determined. The lecture is done in combination with the accompanying exercises. Didactical Approach: With electronic slides an introduction to information visualization is given. (International) colleagues give guest lectures concerning current special topics. Students present current scientific papers and the results of a small implementation thereto.
