Aim of course

Knowledge about different methodical approaches in computer science research. Quantitative and qualitative evaluation of research results. Positioning and demarcation in the context of related work. Documentation and representation of research results. Principles of science ethics.

Subject of course

Overview about research approaches, introduction into scientific investigation and application of digital media.

 

Analysis of scientific work (focus on diploma theses and dissertations at TU Vienna in the area of computer science) according to the used scientific methods and their suitability to different research issues.

 

Learning of foundations and techniques of the most relevant methods like e.g. representation, benchmarking and evaluation of results, creation of criteria catalogues, related work analysis and definition of a focused problem statement, performance of studies.

 

Practical experiences with methods in form of group work by means of selected examples.

Note: All lectures start s.t. If you are not present at the beginning of the first lecture (13:30 s.t.) then you might lose your registration to other students in the waining list.

 

It is obligatory to attend all lectures.

Examination modalities

Starting with an introductory lecture part, the students will perform an analysis of scientific works according to the most relevant methods used resulting in a presentation of the investigated results.  Then, in a second lecture part, the students will learn the basics to be able to apply  the most relevant identified research methods and exercise these practically in groups of ca. 2-3 students by means of selected use cases. The results will be documented and finally presented to the entire group.
